Dhow Suites: Luxury Camp style and concept

The entire Zarafa Dhow Suites unit measures 2260 sq feet (210 m2).

The beige canvas tents evoke 1920s explorations in East African safari style, brought to life through use of Swahili craftsmanship: Intricately carved Lamu doors and palatial open spaces that house beautiful campaign furniture from the Kenyan and Zanzibari coast. Antique rugs and beautiful artifacts complement lush colors of rouge, leather and copper upon the natural tone of the tents.

The two-level unit comprises of a main lounge bookended with the master bedrooms on each side. The main space consists of a spacious lounge with deep couches, a coffee and refreshment area with cappuccino machines and snacks made-to-order. A long dining table offers space to spend quality time with your loved ones recounting the day’s special adventures while the team of private kitchen staff serve your favorite dishes. An oversized verandah features a lovely pool with views of the lagoon and a campfire area to enjoy after dinner drinks. For off-time and siesta hours, in-room massages are offered by the spa therapists (extra).

About your safari experience

Zarafa the Giraffe

It all begins with how to fit a giraffe on a boat enroute from North Africa to Marseille, France! The camp’s namesake giraffe, Zarafa was given in 1826 as a gift from the Ottomon Viceroy of Egypt to Charles X of France, first sending her down the Nile in an East African ‘dhow’ (a Swahili-Arabian sailing vessel) with a hole cut through the upper deck to accommodate her long neck! This beautiful new camp serves as a tribute to the long journey of Zarafa the Giraffe from deep desert Africa to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
