About your safari experience
Zarafa the Giraffe
It all begins with how to fit a giraffe on a boat enroute from North Africa to Marseille, France! The camp’s namesake giraffe, Zarafa was given in 1826 as a gift from the Ottomon Viceroy of Egypt to Charles X of France, first sending her down the Nile in an East African ‘dhow’ (a Swahili-Arabian sailing vessel) with a hole cut through the upper deck to accommodate her long neck! This beautiful new camp serves as a tribute to the long journey of Zarafa the Giraffe from deep desert Africa to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
