Catching a glimpse of an immense sheet of water in the distance, my anticipation was realized to its utmost… Twenty minutes more brought us to the banks of a truly noble river. Occasionally little islands — the favorite resort of hippopotami — were seen emerging.

Philenoptera violacea - Apple-leaf Rain tree - is a fascinating specimen rooted in both genuine biological oddities and traditional folklore. It creates ‘rain’ in dry weather via spittlebugs and carrying its leaf inspires deep friendship rituals.
The Wild Dog — six clear stars loping high through Botswana’s dry-season evenings, charted here for the painted wolves that den beside these camps; golden Alpha Lupi, the figure’s brightest, stands over Mombo. Below it the Milky Way spills toward the Altar — the old fireside of the southern sky, its two posts and hearth-bar drawn in the same pencil. Guided Safaris® guests enjoy a Professional Photography kit in your Duba Plains suite on arrival, complete with pro-camera equipment and lenses for your use on location. You also have the use of professional binoculars. Our Specialist Photography hides provide a unique, up-close perspective of the plains game visiting the camp area. The case opens on cut charcoal foam holding a photographer’s working kit — This one carries the way you will remember everything at Duba Plains. The camera, long-range lens that can frame a leopard and its reflection across a riverbed, the smaller lens prime for firelight photography — each seated in its own well, and ready before dawn.

Across Africa, an estimated 44 million acres of land where these majestic predators once thrived remain unprotected or managed for hunting. Responding to this crisis with a multi-faceted approach, acquiring, safeguarding, and restoring vital habitats outside national parks, including former hunting concessions, community conservancies, and crucial migratory corridors. This effort is made in close partnership with local communities and other conservation allies.
Great Plains founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert launched the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative (BCI), which has, over the past decade, funded more than 150 conservation projects across 28 countries. Current initiatives in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana are pioneering innovative strategies to create maximum positive impact. In 2019, Great Plains relocated five lions, rescuing them from the dangers of poaching and human-wildlife conflict. Similar efforts are underway to restore the lion population to preserve these magnificent creatures and the ecosystems they rely on.
