The 'Sausage' Tree. The sausage tree (Kigelia africana) grows along the Mara's rivers and out into the open savanna, and it is named for the heavy gray-brown fruit — up to two feet long — that hangs from its branches on a long, twisted, rope-like stalk. Its maroon trumpet flowers open after dark on those same pendulous stalks and drip nectar: for the bats that pollinate them, and for the bushbabies and sunbirds that come to drink. When the fruit falls, hippos and elephants eat it.
Sirius — the brightest star in the night — returns to the dawn sky over the Mara in the same weeks the herds return to its banks; the old calendars of half the world were set by its rising. Behind it comes the Great Dog entire, following the sky’s hunt as the prides follow the earthly one. Rise before first light in crossing season: the year’s great heartbeat is written low in the east.
