The private reserves along Kruger National Park’s unfenced western boundary hold the most reliable Big Five viewing in Africa. In the Sabi Sand, leopards have been habituated to vehicles for close to half a century, and sightings that count as once-in-a-lifetime elsewhere are an ordinary morning here: a female draped in a jackalberry, cubs cached among granite boulders, a kill hoisted at dusk. From June to November the southern right whales own Walker Bay. They come up from the Southern Ocean to calve and court in the shallows, and Hermanus — by most reckonings the finest land-based whale watching on Earth — follows them from its cliff path, no boat required. Calves are nursed within meters of the kelp line; adults breach and lobtail close enough that the crack carries up the cliffs, and the town still employs a whale crier who announces sightings on a kelp horn. Birkenhead House stands directly on those cliffs between two of the town’s beaches, its pool deck hanging over the surf, so the season’s whole procession passes your breakfast table. Pair a few nights here with the bushveld and the winelands — the Overberg coast road between them is a journey in its own right.
