A man of extraordinary safari pedigree, Jack set up a rustic camp here to share this remote moonscape with his guests. Jack’s Camp stands on the same site today, alongside Jack’s Private Camp and San Camp, each steeped in a family story that spans 5 generations.
The desert is home to rare species, from the shy Brown Hyena to the Kalahari Lion. After the summer rains, from December to April, great herds of Zebra and Wildebeest gather on the grasslands, and Flamingos flock to the shallow waters of the pans.

Jack’s Camp
Jack’s Camp is old-world safari glamor in the heart of the Great Kalahari. Its tents are dressed in Persian rugs, muslin, and campaign-style furnishings, with vintage natural history lithographs from Deyrolle of Paris and the photo journals of safari legend Peter Beard on the walls. Days bring walks with the Zu/’hoasi San Bushmen, who share their ancient tracking and gathering skills, and long afternoons by the pool pavilion.

Jack’s Private Camp
Jack’s Private Camp is a secluded two-bedroom villa for families and close friends, with your own Private Guide, vehicle, chef, and camp hosts. Each master suite opens onto a veranda with a daybed, and the living areas lead out to a large swimming pool overlooking the Makgadikgadi Pans. Original paintings, drawings, and maps, some dating back to 1660, give every room a sense of heritage.

San Camp
San Camp
San Camp’s billowing canvas tents look out over the Makgadikgadi Pans, a shimmering sea of white that stretches to the horizon. Reimagined in 2020, the camp pairs four-poster beds and Edwardian antiques with Persian rugs, candlelit dinners, and a yoga tent for quiet afternoons. A family of habituated Meerkats lives close by, and on cool mornings one might even use you as a lookout.
At San Camp, the loudest sound at dusk is a Jackal calling across the salt
Makgadikgadi Pans
Today, the salt flats stretch across 6,200 square miles, among the largest in the world. Walks with your Private Guide reveal stone tools left by early people, some up to 500,000 years old, and in the dry winter months, quad bikes carry you deep across the pans.
The ride leads to Kubu Island, a granite outcrop studded with ancient baobabs that rises from the salt. Stone walls and beads brought by traders in search of salt still lie among the rocks, and the San have held the island sacred for longer than anyone knows. Spend the night beneath the stars in an open-air fly camp, then wake to a salt pan sunrise.
Our Desert + Delta safari begins here, with 3 nights at Jack’s Camp, before continuing to Jao Camp and Mombo Camp in the Okavango Delta.
