Mombo

From our Signature safaris selection, Mombo Camp remains steadfast among the finest game experiences in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Mombo Island features only two camps: Mombo Camp & Little Mombo Camp, both identical in style with luxurious tents raised on a platform to offer sweeping views over the game-filled floodplains. The sheer abundance and diversity of large mammals in this region is remarkable year-round; from elephants and both species of rhinoceros to lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

THE COLLECTION

Each month a special chapter

Mombo is a seasonal destination, with each month unfolding a special chapter in wilderness encounters. The exceptional wildlife at Mombo has made it one of Botswana's premier locations for filming nature documentaries. Both Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp are located on Mombo Island, an extension of the northwestern tip of Chiefs Island, which separates the Okavango into eastern and western sections. The tented suites at both camps are spacious and beautifully designed, featuring open layouts that include private decks with plunge pools and thatched gazebos. These provide perfect spots for relaxing afternoon siestas or observing the constant wildlife activity on the floodplains below.

At the northern tip of Chief’s Island

Nestled within the sanctuary of Mombo Island, at the northern tip of Chief's Island, lies the enchanting Mombo Camp. Here, the island is adorned with open floodplains of the Okavango Delta, and the camp itself emerges amidst the sprawling shade of ancient mangosteen, ebony, and fig trees, gazing out over a wondrous floodplain alive with the dance of wildlife. Amidst the golden light, the essence of the delta unfolds, adorned with the majestic presence of the noble lion and the stealthy grace of the big cats. The skies are alive with the melody of wings, as waterfowl and waders grace the heavens with their presence, painting a portrait of untamed beauty.

The tented suites at Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp are spacious and elegant with an open layout featuring a private deck area with a plunge pool and thatched gazebo for afternoon siestas or watching the ever-present wildlife grazing on the floodplains. Enjoy daily morning and afternoon game drives through the exclusive Mombo Island concession, renowned for its legendary big cats.

The great concentration of predators

As National Geographic explorers-in-residence, the Jouberts devoted their conservation efforts to the Big Cat Initiative (Founded 2008). Their documentary film Eye of the Leopard took shape at Mombo Concession in the Okavango Delta. Beverly Joubert describes this experience here: “Around 2003, Dereck and I were fortunate to discover a newborn leopard cub. We had been tracking its mother for a few days. She led us to her den, where we met this tiny little fluffy furball, who we later called Legadema. The moments we spent with this mother and daughter were a lesson in caring and compassion. Their attention to each other, as if nothing else mattered, was part of the love affair I started feeling for all leopards. This moment changed our lives.”

A sanctuary of unrivaled splendor

Mombo Concession offers exceptional opportunities to observe abundant lions and leopards, as well as a high concentration of plains game roaming the landscape. Chiefs Island and Mombo are located within the Moremi Game Reserve, specifically in a zone designated for "low intensity" safari use. Herds of buffalo and small antelope like steenbok also thrive here. This rich biodiversity is largely due to the area's unique position on the ecotone between the ancient Kalahari sands and vegetation of Chiefs Island, and the more modern, water-fed sediments and grasses of the Okavango fan to the west.
